Old World Patio: Cheshire, CT
Our client wanted a wrought iron style railing and substantial fire pit cover to “WOW” his guests while entertaining on his patio. We designed this railing railing and cover to create a feeling of weight and old world richness to match the stature of both our client’s personality and that of his usual guests.
The railing defined a 1000sf stone surface with a 2” molded top rail bent along the radius of the patio. We incorporated hand forged steel rings as a detail over 3/4” curved balusters that add volume to the form of the railing. At the ends the top rail is tapered and scrolled opposing the support rail in a way that evokes the Hindu god Ganesha in a long sloping curve.
The fire pit cover is made from hand hammered 16ga. copper supported with 1/8” steel straps. the whole cap is roughly 48” round and 10” deep weighing nearly 150lbs. We custom made a lift mechanism that incorporated a set of torsion springs to offset the weight so it only feels like you’re lifting 25lbs.
Needless to say it was a lot of work for our small shop but well worth the effort to see it come out as it did!
